2026’s Top 5 Anti-Trends from an Interior Designer

As we kick off the new year, I'm already being inundated with that new resolution, that hot new purse/belt/shoe, the trends of 2026, the current obsession on TV...WE GET IT! Culture tells us new is best! Fresh is best! Be your hot, new, fresh, young, best self for 2026! As an interior designer, I get it! We want our homes to be beautiful and fresh and represent us well...but at what cost?! Trends are constantly changing. Should we have to redo a bathroom every few years to stay up with them? This may be a hot take, but we really don't think so! Maybe you need to pause here and get out that huge sigh of relief. You can actually just… design your home to last, instead of being in a constant state of remodel! To make this possible, I’ve compiled a list for you of timeless, beautiful choices for your home going into 2026--my anti-trends, if you will!

1. Wood Floors

Real wood floors are a timeless choice! They've been used for centuries, and nobody is walking through historic buildings or palaces and saying, "Ew. 3 1/4" planks?" Haha! Go with a timeless width and a mid-neutral color. Though they're beautiful, light-stained white oak floors will be dated at some point, while a medium brown will last much longer.

2. Countertops

Natural stone is our most timeless choice here. While quartz is very, very durable, its colors and patterns are very informed by the times! In our showroom, we have had the same white quartz countertop for the last ten years, and it has held up beautifully to the daily stress we inflict upon it. But, in another ten, would it still be on trend? We'll still be wanting that marble look, I'm sure, but in white and gray? Will we want more warmth or less? A true, natural stone would be a longer-lasting choice only because it's colors and pattern could never read man-made. The colors are so sophisticated and beautiful that they truly can withstand the test of time!

3. Wool Rugs

Many people are put off by wool rugs because of the initial cost or perceived maintenance they require. Neither worry could be further from the truth! Are there rugs online for $5.99? Probably. But will those rugs last more than two months? No. And, y’all, don't be duped that "washable rugs" will be easier to maintain than wool! They won’t! Wool is naturally durable, resilient, and soft, while also being fire-resistant, hypoallergenic, and excellent at absorbing sound. They even naturally repel stains and soil, making them one of the most sustainable choices for your home. Wool rugs come in all patterns and colors, too, so there's no need to introduce man-made fibers into your rug for durability--wool is already bringing its A-game!

4. Cabinet Hardware

Unlacquered brass and polished nickel are the two most timeless finishes right now. But, instead of finishes, I want to talk about function. Your cabinet hardware should feel good in your hand. It should be comfortable to use. I know that shouldn't be a crazy thing to say, but some hardware is so clearly just designed for aesthetics and not function. Why would we want to interact with a pull or knob that is uncomfortable to use for years to come? Pick your hardware based on function first.

5. Investment Furniture

I don't believe in disposable furniture. I believe in heirloom-quality pieces that can last a lifetime. Set aside the fact that our disposable furniture epidemic is cluttering the landfills to an alarming degree; it isn't beautiful or comfortable! Why would we buy the wrong sofa we could have NOW instead of the right sofa we could have forever? I understand cost being prohibitive to some custom furniture lines, but that isn't true of all lines. Quality furniture is more accessible than you may think! Ask about the construction of the frame and cushions before buying a piece. If "that's not something the salesperson knows"...that's not the piece for us! Additionally, if kids are growing up out of the playroom eventually, but we still want a sofa in there for now, think through your style. Buy a sofa shape you'll love forever and get it reupholstered for the teen lounge, or adult den, etc., as they grow or the room's use changes.

Ultimately, your home should be a reflection of YOU and your values. It is supposed to take care of you, shelter you, and support you through this life! Before getting hyped up on trends this year, think through where you're really trying to go in the long term. How can we help you get there?
